Haunted Attraction Nightly Operations and Safety Checklist

MTT TeamOctober 6, 20263 min read

Haunted attractions pack a whole year of business into a few weekends in October. They run in the dark, with loud effects, tight corridors, fog, costumed actors and excited crowds. A good scare depends on everything working exactly as planned, and the safety margin is thinner than in most venues. A nightly checklist is what keeps the experience frightening for guests and safe for everyone.

Before Opening Night

  • Confirm permits, fire inspection and any required occupancy approvals
  • Walk every route with the person responsible for safety
  • Mark and test all emergency exits, exit signs and emergency lighting
  • Brief every actor on boundaries: no touching guests unless your format allows it with consent
  • Agree on a stop-show signal and who can call it
  • Train staff on what to do if a guest panics, falls or feels unwell

Nightly Opening

  • Walk the full route with lights on, looking for trip hazards, loose props and damaged flooring
  • Check that exit routes are clear and exit doors open from the inside
  • Test fog machines, strobes, animatronics and sound
  • Confirm fire extinguishers are in place and charged
  • Check radios for every zone leader
  • Confirm first aid kit and who is first aid trained tonight
  • Brief the cast: guest numbers expected, any changes, the stop-show signal

Actor Safety

  • Water and breaks scheduled for every actor, especially in heavy costumes and masks
  • A safe retreat point in each scare zone
  • No actor working a zone they have not walked through with lights on
  • Check masks and prosthetics allow enough vision to move safely

During the Show

  • Control group sizes and spacing at the entrance
  • Zone leaders check in by radio at set intervals
  • Watch for guests who are distressed and offer an exit
  • Log any incident immediately, however small
  • Pause the queue if a zone needs a reset

Guest Communication

  • Post content warnings at the entrance: strobe, fog, enclosed spaces
  • Make "safe word" or exit procedures clear before entry
  • Have a route out for guests who want to leave part-way

Closing

  • Sweep every room for guests left behind, including hidden corners
  • Turn off effects in a set order and power down equipment
  • Secure props, weapons replicas and tools
  • Count cash and reconcile ticket sales
  • Debrief zone leaders: incidents, near misses, broken props
  • Log repairs needed before the next show

After the Season

  • Review incident logs for patterns
  • Store props and costumes properly to prevent damage
  • Thank the cast and keep contact details for next year

Write each incident down while it is fresh, even if it seems minor; see running effective end-of-shift debriefs. For crowd surges on big nights, the principles in event venue setup apply too.

How MyTeamTasks Helps

A haunted attraction has a big seasonal cast and only a few nights to get things right. In MyTeamTasks, the opening walk, effects checks and closing sweep are checklists assigned to zone leaders, exit and extinguisher checks can be photo tasks, and the owner can see each night which zones were checked before the doors opened.
