Store Walk Checklist for District and Area Managers

MTT TeamOctober 6, 20262 min read

District and area managers spend much of their week walking stores. Done well, a store walk raises standards across a region and gives store managers clear priorities. Done badly, it is a stressful inspection that produces a long list nobody acts on. The difference is a consistent checklist and a short, specific follow-up.

Before the Visit

  • Review the store's recent numbers: sales, labour, shrink, completion of daily routines
  • Check open actions from the last visit
  • Tell the store manager you are coming, unless you are doing an unannounced standards check by design
  • Decide on one or two focus areas for this visit

Outside the Store

  • Parking area and entrance clean and safe
  • Signage working and correct
  • Windows and displays current and tidy

Sales Floor

  • Shelves stocked and faced
  • Prices and promotions correct
  • Seasonal displays set to plan
  • Aisles clear and safe
  • Customer service: greetings, queue length, staff availability

Back of House

  • Stockroom organised and safe
  • Deliveries processed
  • Cleaning standards in toilets, staff room and storage
  • Safety equipment in place and checked

Compliance

  • Required logs complete: temperature, safety, cash
  • Training records up to date
  • Any required notices displayed

People

  • Talk to staff, not just the manager
  • Ask what gets in their way
  • Recognise good work specifically
  • Check the schedule matches traffic

Close the Visit

  • Agree on no more than three priority actions with the store manager
  • Give each action an owner and a date
  • Write it down before you leave
  • Check progress at the next visit

A focused list beats a long one. For the bigger picture, see managing multiple locations with one task system and how to roll out checklist templates across multiple locations.

How MyTeamTasks Helps

A store walk is only as good as its follow-up. In MyTeamTasks, the walk itself is a checklist, issues found can be logged with photos, and the three agreed actions become tasks assigned to the store manager with due dates, so the district manager can see before the next visit which ones are done.
