
Solar Installation Crew Daily Checklist
A residential solar installation is three trades stacked on one another. It is roof work, with all of roofing's fall exposure. It is electrical work, with a DC circuit that is energized any time the sun is on the modules. And it is a permitted, inspected installation where a single missed label costs a return visit and a rescheduled inspection.
Crews that install fast and pass inspection first time are not working faster than anyone else. They are working in a fixed order, with the checks built into the order.
The Day Before
- Confirm the job address, scope, and system design
- Confirm the permit is issued and on site
- Confirm the approved plan set and any engineering letters
- Confirm module, inverter, and racking quantities against the design
- Confirm all balance-of-system components are staged
- Confirm the crew assignment and start time
- Confirm the homeowner is notified and access is arranged
- Check the forecast for wind, heat, and storms
- Confirm the utility interconnection status
Counting the components the night before is what prevents the mid-morning supply run. A missing set of end clamps stops a crew as effectively as a missing inverter.
Equipment and Safety Gear
- Confirm harnesses, lanyards, and anchors for every crew member
- Inspect each harness for damage before it is worn
- Inspect ladders for damage and confirm locks function
- Confirm the ladder stabilizer and tie-off materials
- Confirm insulated tools rated for the DC voltage
- Confirm electrical PPE: arc-rated clothing, gloves, face protection
- Confirm meters and testers are functional and calibrated
- Confirm the torque wrench is calibrated
- Confirm fire extinguisher and first aid kit on the truck
- Confirm water, shade, and heat management supplies
A calibrated torque wrench is what makes racking warranties valid. Fasteners tightened by feel are the most common finding in a warranty inspection.
Site Arrival
- Introduce the crew to the homeowner and confirm the plan for the day
- Confirm access to the roof, attic, main panel, and meter
- Identify overhead power lines and confirm clearance
- Identify ground hazards and set the work zone
- Protect landscaping, driveway, and interior floors
- Confirm the location of pets and children
- Confirm parking that does not block the homeowner or neighbors
- Photograph the pre-existing condition of roof, walls, and panel area
The pre-existing condition photos protect the company from the roof leak that predates the install and the driveway crack that was already there.
Fall Protection
- Install roof anchors into structural members
- Confirm anchors are rated and correctly fastened
- Confirm every worker on the roof is tied off before working
- Confirm lanyard length prevents contact with a lower level
- Confirm the ladder is tied off and extends three feet above the eave
- Confirm the rescue plan for a suspended worker
Roof Layout and Mounting
- Locate and mark rafters with a reliable method
- Confirm the layout against the approved plan
- Confirm setbacks and fire pathways per code
- Drill pilot holes at the marked rafter centers
- Apply flashing and sealant per the manufacturer's instructions
- Install mounts and torque to specification
- Confirm each mount hits structure, not sheathing alone
- Install rails and confirm they are level and square
- Confirm rail splices and cantilever limits per the engineering
Every penetration is flashed per the roofing manufacturer's method, not per habit. Leaks show up months later and they are always attributed to the solar company.
Electrical: DC Side
- Confirm modules match the specified model and wattage
- Install module-level electronics per the design
- Confirm string configuration matches the plan
- Verify polarity on every string before connection
- Confirm connectors are the same manufacturer and fully seated
- Confirm wire management keeps conductors off the roof surface
- Confirm no conductor is subject to abrasion or sunlight degradation
- Measure and record open circuit voltage per string
- Confirm grounding and bonding continuity
Mismatched connectors from different manufacturers are a listed-product violation and a fire risk. They physically mate, which is exactly why crews get away with it until an inspector notices.
Electrical: AC Side
- Confirm the main panel busbar and breaker rating support the interconnection
- Install the inverter per clearance and mounting requirements
- Install the AC disconnect at the required location
- Confirm conductor sizing and overcurrent protection against the plan
- Confirm conduit runs are supported and sealed
- Confirm the rapid shutdown device and initiator are installed
- Torque every termination to specification
- Confirm the grounding electrode conductor and bonding
Labeling
Labeling is where more inspections fail than any other single category.
- Label the AC and DC disconnects
- Label the inverter and rapid shutdown initiator
- Label the main service panel with the solar interconnection
- Apply the rapid shutdown placard at the service entrance
- Label all conduit runs carrying DC conductors
- Apply the system rating and specification labels
- Confirm labels are engraved or code-compliant material, not printed paper
- Confirm every label matches the as-built configuration
Labels are checked against the as-built, not the design. A string count that changed during install and a label that did not is an automatic correction notice.
Commissioning
- Confirm all connections are torqued and documented
- Confirm the inverter firmware is current
- Energize the system in the correct sequence
- Confirm the inverter reports normal operation
- Measure and record actual production
- Confirm monitoring is online and reporting
- Test the rapid shutdown function
- Record all commissioning values in the job file
Homeowner Handoff
- Walk the homeowner through the system components
- Show the location of every disconnect
- Demonstrate the shutdown procedure
- Set up and demonstrate the monitoring app
- Explain expected production and seasonal variation
- Explain the warranty terms for equipment and workmanship
- Provide the documentation package
- Explain the inspection and utility permission-to-operate timeline
- Confirm the homeowner knows the system is not producing until PTO
The permission-to-operate explanation prevents the most common post-install support call: a homeowner watching a system sit idle and assuming it is broken.
Site Cleanup
- Remove all packaging, cardboard, and pallets
- Sweep the roof and gutters of debris and fasteners
- Magnet sweep the driveway, walkways, and lawn
- Remove interior protection and clean any work areas
- Confirm the attic is left as found with insulation replaced
- Photograph the completed installation from multiple angles
- Confirm the homeowner is satisfied with site condition
Inspection Preparation
- Confirm the as-built matches the permitted plan or a revision is filed
- Confirm all labels are installed
- Confirm the placards are legible from the required distance
- Confirm access to all equipment for the inspector
- Confirm the plan set and permit are on site
- Confirm someone knowledgeable will meet the inspector
