Sauna and Cold Plunge Studio Cleaning Checklist

MTT TeamOctober 4, 20263 min read

Recovery studios offering saunas, cold plunges and contrast therapy have popped up in cities everywhere. Clients love them. Inspectors and reviewers notice quickly when they are not clean. Warm, wet, shared spaces are exactly where hygiene problems grow, and cold plunge water that is not properly treated can become a health risk.

This checklist covers daily cleaning, water care and safety for small studios. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your equipment and your local health department's rules for shared water facilities.

Opening

  • Check sauna heaters, controls and timers work and temperatures are correct
  • Check cold plunge temperature, water level and clarity
  • Test cold plunge water chemistry (sanitiser level and pH) and log results
  • Check showers, drains and floors for standing water
  • Stock towels, robes, slippers and toiletries
  • Confirm emergency call buttons work, if installed

Between Every Session

  • Wipe benches and backrests in sauna rooms
  • Remove used towels and replace with fresh ones
  • Wipe plunge edges, steps and handrails
  • Check the plunge for debris, hair and skin products and skim if needed
  • Mop wet floors and replace bath mats
  • Ask clients to shower before entering the plunge, and make it easy with clear signage

Water Care

Cold water slows some bacteria, but it does not make a plunge safe on its own, and many plunge units are small volumes shared by many people.

  • Follow the manufacturer's filtration and sanitation instructions
  • Test sanitiser and pH at set times and log every test
  • Change water and clean the tub on the schedule the manufacturer recommends, or sooner with heavy use
  • Clean or replace filters on schedule
  • Close the plunge immediately if water is cloudy, smells or tests out of range

The CDC's Healthy Swimming programme explains how germs spread in shared water and why disinfection and pre-entry showers matter.

Safety

Extreme heat and cold both carry real risks, especially for people with heart conditions, pregnancy or high blood pressure.

  • Ask clients to complete a health questionnaire and sign a waiver
  • Post maximum time recommendations and temperature information
  • Brief first-time clients on how to use the sauna and plunge safely
  • Check on clients at regular intervals
  • Keep drinking water available
  • Train staff to recognise signs of overheating and cold shock, and to call for help

Deep Clean (Weekly)

  • Scrub sauna benches with a cleaner suitable for the wood or material
  • Clean walls, doors and glass
  • Descale showers and fixtures
  • Clean drains and grates
  • Wash mats and replace worn items

Closing

  • Turn off heaters according to manufacturer instructions
  • Cover the plunge if it has a cover
  • Final mop, empty bins, start laundry
  • Log the day's water tests and any incidents
  • Note supply levels for the morning

How MyTeamTasks Helps

Water tests and between-session resets are exactly the tasks that get skipped on a busy evening. In MyTeamTasks, each test is a text task with the reading recorded and timestamped, resets are quick checkbox tasks, and photo tasks show the room was ready. If a client or inspector asks about water care, you can show every test for the month.
