Ice Rink Daily Operations Checklist
Ice rinks, from year-round arenas to seasonal outdoor rinks in town squares, are busiest from November to February. Public sessions, lessons, hockey and parties share the same sheet of ice, and the quality of that ice decides how the day goes. A daily checklist keeps the ice safe, the rentals clean and the sessions on time.
Daily Opening
- Check ice surface for cracks, holes, soft spots or debris
- Check refrigeration readings and log them
- Check dasher boards, gates, glass and netting for damage
- Check rink lighting and sound system
- Clear and grit entrances and walkways
- Check skate rental counter: sizes, sharpening, sanitising supplies
- Confirm first aid kit and that a first aider is on shift
- Brief staff on the day's sessions, lessons and parties
Ice Resurfacing
- Resurface between sessions on schedule
- Check resurfacer fuel or charge and water levels
- Make sure the ice is clear of people before the resurfacer enters
- Inspect the ice after resurfacing before reopening
Skate Rental
- Sanitise skates between uses
- Check blades and sharpen as needed
- Check laces and replace worn ones
- Keep helmets available, and encourage them for children and beginners
During Public Sessions
- Have marshals on the ice to manage speed and direction
- Keep beginners and children in a designated area if possible
- Clear the ice quickly and calmly for any fall that needs attention
- Log every incident and first aid treatment
Outdoor Rinks
- Check weather forecasts; close or adjust if the surface softens
- Clear snow from the ice and surrounding areas
- Check heaters and shelter for staff
Closing
- Final resurface if scheduled
- Sweep and clean seating and changing areas
- Sanitise and store rental skates
- Count cash and reconcile ticket and rental sales
- Log refrigeration readings and maintenance needs
- Lock up and check doors and lighting
Cold-weather staff need breaks and warm layers; see how to keep outdoor crews safe in cold weather. Rental counters work much like the ski and snowboard rental shop checklist.
How MyTeamTasks Helps
A rink runs on routines that repeat every few hours. In MyTeamTasks, opening checks, resurfacing schedules and closing tasks are checklists, refrigeration readings are text tasks, ice inspections can be photo tasks, and the manager can see every session's checks completed on time.
