
Auto Glass Installation Job Checklist
Most customers think of a windshield as a window. It is not. In a modern vehicle, the windshield contributes to roof crush resistance, provides the backstop that the passenger airbag deploys against, and carries the camera that runs lane keeping and automatic emergency braking.
An improperly bonded windshield can separate in a rollover. An uncalibrated camera can cause the vehicle to brake or steer at the wrong moment. Neither failure shows up on the drive home.
That is why this trade runs on adhesive specifications, cure times, and calibration procedures rather than on speed.
Job Intake
- Record the vehicle year, make, model, and trim
- Record the VIN
- Confirm the glass part number from the VIN, not the model alone
- Confirm the features present: rain sensor, heated wiper park, acoustic interlayer, HUD
- Confirm whether the vehicle has advanced driver assistance systems
- Confirm which cameras or sensors mount to the glass
- Confirm whether calibration is required and which type
- Confirm insurance or customer payment
- Confirm the job location: shop or mobile
- Confirm the customer's availability for the full cure time
The part number from the VIN is not optional. The same model year can carry six different windshields, and the wrong one means a wasted trip and a damaged part.
Deciding Repair Versus Replacement
- Measure the damage size
- Determine the damage location relative to the driver's view
- Determine whether the damage penetrates both layers
- Confirm the damage is not in the camera's field of view
- Confirm the damage is not at the edge of the glass
- Recommend repair where it meets the standard, replacement where it does not
- Explain the decision and the outcome expectation to the customer
Repair is often the correct recommendation and it is what builds trust. A shop that always replaces is a shop customers stop trusting.
Mobile Job Assessment
- Confirm the work location is level and sheltered
- Confirm the temperature is within the adhesive's specification
- Confirm no rain or high humidity beyond the adhesive limits
- Confirm access around the entire vehicle
- Confirm power availability if needed
- Decline or reschedule if conditions fall outside adhesive requirements
Adhesive has published temperature and humidity limits. Working outside them produces a bond that looks fine and is not.
Preparation
- Confirm the correct glass part against the vehicle before removal
- Inspect the new glass for defects, distortion, and correct hardware
- Photograph the vehicle's pre-existing condition, including paint and trim
- Photograph the existing glass damage
- Protect the interior: dash, seats, and console
- Protect the hood and fenders
- Confirm the customer has removed personal items from the dash
Removal
- Disconnect and protect any sensors and wiring at the glass
- Remove cowl, trim, and moldings without breaking clips
- Note and set aside all clips and fasteners
- Cut the urethane bead using the appropriate tool
- Avoid cutting into the pinch weld or paint
- Remove the glass with two people or proper handling equipment
- Set the removed glass aside safely for recycling or disposal
Cutting into the pinch weld paint is the most common installation error and it causes rust that eventually destroys the bond. It also voids most adhesive warranties.
Pinch Weld Preparation
- Trim the existing urethane to the specified remaining thickness
- Do not remove urethane down to bare metal unnecessarily
- Inspect the pinch weld for rust, damage, or prior repair
- Treat any exposed metal with the specified primer
- Confirm the primer's flash time before proceeding
- Clean the bonding surface per the adhesive manufacturer's instruction
- Confirm no contamination, oil, or moisture remains
Full cut-out down to metal requires a specific primer and process. Skipping it creates a bond to bare steel that will corrode.
Glass Preparation
- Clean the glass bonding surface with the specified cleaner
- Apply glass primer where the adhesive system requires it
- Observe the specified flash time
- Install any moldings, clips, and hardware to the new glass
- Confirm the mirror bracket, sensors, and brackets are correctly positioned
- Do not touch the primed surfaces
Setting the Glass
- Confirm the urethane is within its shelf life and within its temperature range
- Apply a continuous bead at the specified height and profile
- Confirm no gaps or breaks in the bead
- Set the glass using proper alignment aids
- Confirm the glass is centered and evenly gapped
- Press to full seat without squeezing the bead flat
- Confirm the glass contacts the setting blocks correctly
- Clean any excess urethane immediately
The bead height determines the bond thickness. A flattened bead is a weak bond, and it is invisible once the trim is on.
Reassembly
- Reconnect all sensors and wiring
- Reinstall cowl, trim, and moldings with new clips where broken
- Reinstall wipers in the correct park position
- Confirm all fasteners are torqued or seated
- Confirm the rain sensor gel pad or coupling is correct
- Confirm no wiring is pinched
Safe Drive-Away Time
- Confirm the adhesive's safe drive-away time for the conditions
- Confirm the temperature and humidity at the job
- Inform the customer of the exact time the vehicle may be driven
- Provide the safe drive-away time in writing
- Instruct the customer to leave a window slightly open
- Instruct the customer to avoid car washes and rough roads for the specified period
- Instruct the customer to leave retention tape in place as specified
Safe drive-away time varies with temperature and humidity, sometimes by hours. Telling the customer a number from memory rather than from the chart is how a vehicle leaves before the bond can hold in a crash.
Calibration
- Confirm which calibration the vehicle requires: static, dynamic, or both
- Confirm the calibration environment requirements: level floor, lighting, target distance
- Confirm the vehicle's fuel level, tire pressure, and load meet the procedure
- Perform the calibration per the manufacturer's procedure
- Confirm the calibration completes without fault codes
- Document the calibration result and retain the report
- Perform the road test where the procedure requires it
- Confirm no warning lights remain
A vehicle released without a required calibration is a vehicle whose driver assistance systems may act on bad data. Document the calibration or document that the customer declined it in writing.
Quality Check and Delivery
- Inspect the installation for even gaps and correct alignment
- Confirm no urethane is visible or on the paint
- Test for wind noise and leaks with a water test where appropriate
- Confirm all electrical functions work: sensors, defrost, mirror, HUD
- Clean the glass inside and out
- Clean the interior of any debris
- Walk the customer through the work and the aftercare instructions
- Provide the warranty terms in writing
- Present the invoice and collect payment or confirm the insurance billing
End of Day
- Complete all job records with photos and part numbers
- Attach all calibration reports to the job
- Dispose of or recycle the removed glass
- Confirm adhesive inventory and shelf life dates
- Restock consumables: primers, cleaners, clips, blades
- Report any tool issue
- Confirm tomorrow's jobs and confirm parts are ordered
Adhesive shelf life is checked and enforced. Expired urethane does not cure to its rated strength and there is no way to see that from the outside.
